Smoking is the most common means of consuming tobacco known to
people since the earliest times. Tobacco industry has achieved great popularity
and is flourishing today because lots of people on the globe are addicted to
smoking. The variety of tobacco sorts and cigarette types is so wide that the
industry is considered to be among the most developed around the world.
Marlboro is one of the most popular brands in the tobacco world. Marlboro
cigarette is made by Altria Group, Inc. (NYSE: MO) (previously named Philip
Morris Companies Inc.). On January 27, 2003, Philip Morris Companies Inc.
changed its name to Altria Group, Inc., to correct its image as a tobacco only
company.
It is
famous for its billboard advertisements and magazine ads of the Marlboro Man.
It is currently the best selling cigarette brand in the world.
You'll probably be surprised to discover that originally it was
targeted at female smokers. This brand was created in England in 1847, but it
hadn't gained any popularity at that time. The attempt to launch Marlboro
cigarettes on the market of the United States in 1920 was slightly more
successful, but still the efforts to promote the product were interrupted by
the Second World War when the Marlboro cigarettes were taken off the market.
Such an unavailing campaign
hadn't disheartened the promoters of the cigarettes. The brand was introduced
on the market in the fifties once again. It was the time of the concentration
on health protection. In such situation Marlboro cigarettes have got the first
place on the cigarettes market, because they were filtered as distinct from
cigarettes of other manufacturers. At this time the brand was also re-targeted
at smoking men, and all these factors have resulted in the growing popularity
of Marlboro. That was the moment where the Marlboro prosperity has started its
history.
The Marlboro cigarettes are associated with masculinity since its
advertisement campaign is focused on images of brave heroes and cowboys.
Marlboro cigarettes also have harder taste than the cigarettes of the competing
brands. Even light cigarettes are to some extent harder than other regular
cigarettes. It also contributes to the feeling of being manly and strong when
smoking. These are for the most part psychological parameters, but their impact
on the selection of cigarettes of numerous people in the world is essential.
One more benefit of Marlboro cigarettes is that the nicotine
content in tobacco stays on the same level through the whole history of the
corporation while in other corporations the nicotine content is augmenting as
time goes by. What is also essential, the price of Marlboro cigarettes is quite
moderate. In fact, these cigarettes constitute the best correlation
"price-quality" on contemporary tobacco market.
Philip Morris was the first owner of Marlboro
Company. Philip Morris opened a shop in London's Bond street in 1847, selling
tobacco and rolled cigarrettes. Upon Mr. Morris death, his wife Margaret and
his brother Leopold took care of the business.
How
the product got its name
The brand is named after Great Marlborough
Street, the location of its original London factory.
Most American cigarette makers, including Philip Morris (PM), have used ammonia in
their manufacturing processes for decades, to "puff up" tobacco to
increase its volume, highlight certain flavors, help hold together
reconstituted tobacco sheet and reduce the amount of nicotine. Lesser known is that
tobacco companies use ammonia to "freebase" the nicotine in smoke, essentially
turning it into "crack nicotine." Freebase nicotine is absorbed by the body more quickly
and easily, resulting in a faster, harder "kick" after lighting up.
Using ammonia has allowed tobacco companies to lower the tar and nicotine
levels in cigarettes while still keeping smokers addicted, a strategy developed
to deal with the health fears surrounding cigarettes. PM was the first to use
"ammonia technology," applying it to Marlboros in the 1960s. After
the change, Marlboro zoomed from a minor brand to a runaway market success,
causing other cigarette makers to scramble to discover PM's "secret."
After PM was accused of intentionally manipulating
the nicotine deliveries of its cigarettes, the company pointed to all the
other uses for ammonia to defend itself against the charge.
